The new album by Raspberry Bulbs, like a dip in a very cold lake, takes a second to get used to. It's not something comforting, it's something that demands you go down to its own level in order to truly feel it. However, down there, the temperature more represents the actual weather rather than the artifical comfort we surround ourselves with. So it makes sense that amongst the song titles is 'Life on the Level', which begs the idea of looking beyond a familiar vision to try and reveal something horrible and fascinating, with an emphasis on the trying. There is no success here. No success in being honest, truthful, or achieving a real understanding, but at least an honest attempt. That's what the album does, it attempts to be true in its portrayal of emotion and the mystery of life both in lyric and in sound.
In terms of the songs, 'Nature Tries Again' doesn't stray far from the road that RB has already marched down. If anything these 8 songs are further stripped down and represent a move to make more concise pop music while borrowing aesthetics from the most extreme of other music genres. Don't get me wrong, this album is really rough, yet it should still echo some familiar (im)purity.
